For those who’ve followed me for a while, you know that our firm, Hixon Zuercher Capital Management, has a set of 5 Core Values.
They are: Integrity, Professionalism, Excellence, Teamwork & Abundance.
I’ve written about each of them from time to time over the years. For today, I’d like to dig deeper into Abundance.
What does it mean? And is it real?
The opposite of Abundance is scarcity. And the problem we humans have with Abundance is that our minds evolved during a world of scarcity not only thousands of years ago, but as recently as the Great Depression. I sat with my 89-year-old widowed client the other day and she expressed agony over having to buy a new $50 coffee maker despite her net worth of over $6 million. She grew up in the Great Depression and has carried that mindset forward throughout her life.
She’s not alone. Many people today remain trapped in unhealthy scarcity thinking.
In the world of scarcity, there’s only one pie. If your neighbor gets a slice, that means there’s less pie to go around for everyone else, and you’re left cutting thinner and thinner slices so everyone else gets a crumb. But, when you have an Abundance mindset, rather than slicing the pie into smaller and smaller slices…you create more pies!
Training your mind to have an Abundance mindset will transform your life, your family, your team and your world.
Despite our inherent propensity to have a scarcity mindset, today’s world is rapidly moving towards Abundance. AI, biotech, robotics, VR, and exponential tech are all quickly enhancing the human species. Things that once were only available to the richest and elite are now available for almost everyone…anywhere in the world. A child in Tanzania can use an AI chatbot or Google to find information they want or even pull up a Video conference with someone on the other side of the world…for free!
Many things that used to cost millions just a few decades ago are now available on our smartphones at no cost.
This is the future that exponential leaders are enabling, and it’s true across nearly every sector, in every industry. Whether you realize it and appreciate it or not, it’s happening, be grateful.
Lest you think all of this is creating a society of luxury and entitlement, it’s not, if used properly. Rather, it’s creating a world of possibility.
Kick scarcity to the curb. Create more pies. Embrace an Abundance mindset.
And live on purpose today.
