The time it takes the Earth to complete a rotation in its orbit around the sun is 365 days (a year). The time it takes the moon to orbit around the earth is 30 days (a month, give or take). The time it takes for a week (which isn’t tied to a lunar standard, rather, it’s tied to the Creation narrative in the Book of Genesis in the Bible) to complete is 7 days. The time it takes for a day to expire is 24 hours.
As it turns out, the average human lifespan is around 30,000 of those 24-hour days. Eat healthy and exercise, you may get some additional. Eat fast food and sit on your couch and you may get a few less. Misfortunately, lives can be cut shorter based on accidents, sickness, and other bad decisions. Conversely, our lives can be much longer based on risk aversion and good decisions.
So, the question is, how many days do you have left? If you’re 40, you have 15,400 days left. 50? 11,750 days. 60? 8,100 days. 70? 4,450.
“Okay, Tony”, I hear my readers exclaim. “What’s with all this morbid talk? Just get to the point!”
And thus, I shall.
How are you spending your day?
We each get 24 hours. 8 of them are spent sleeping (this is a good thing!), so we’re left with 16. 16 hours to make our living, work with dignity, be with our families, move our bodies, engage our minds, and enjoy the moments.
Depending on your attitude, that sounds like plenty of time. It’s enough time to do the things you were called to do…if you take initiative to do them. Human tendencies, however, are to be lazy, binge watch TV, stay in bed too long, and not engage with life. But for you, gentle reader, may it never be!
May you get enough sleep.
Get up on time.
Move your body.
Make healthy choices.
Read for enjoyment.
Connect with your Higher Power.
Get better.
Work hard for your wages.
Be present.
Love well.
Breathe deeply.
Be intentional.
Enjoy the beauty of God’s creation.
Be kind to others.
And make today matter.
Don’t have an ‘average day’. Have a significant day. Make it a great day! Don’t let your day happen to you…you happen to it. Plan to be impactful. Plan for success. Stay Above the Line. And by the time the day is over, rest your head on your pillow knowing you gave today your very best.
Tomorrow awaits. But it’s not guaranteed.
Make today matter. Make your day significant.
And may you live on purpose today.
